The Housing Options Program

The Housing Options Program is a NEW grant program intended to preserve, maintain and build NEW affordable rental units throughout Pennsylvania. Millions in housing investments have been awarded to ensure that affordable rental units remain available and in good condition in Pennsylvania.

HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - In 66% of housing markets, buying is more affordable than renting.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - 44.1 million American households are renters.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - Black and Hispanic households are twice as likely to rent compared to white households.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - The median U.S. rent accounts for 29.1% of the average American household income.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - Rent prices nationwide increased by almost 50% from 2007 to 2017.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - 127 working hours is the weekly requirement for minimum wage earners to afford the average apartment.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - For every 100 very low-income households, only 36 affordable rentals are available.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - To afford a basic two-bedroom apartment in the United States, renters need to earn an average of $20.30 per hour. PA’s current minimum wage is $7.25 per hour.
HOUSING OPTIONS PROGRAM - The share of income needed to pay rent increased the most for low-income households from 2019 to 2021.

On Friday, November 17th, Senator Hughes hosted press conference to call attention to and celebrate $98M in grants that were awarded through the Housing Options Grant Program. The first time grants were awarded across the Commonwealth to preserve and build over 3,000 affordable rental units, a major win for Pennsylvanians and communities.
