The children of Philadelphia are desperate for change in their school environments. We hope our plan to tour the toxic schools our students attend will show our colleagues across the Commonwealth the dire conditions our children face and finally spur action in Harrisburg to help fund our facilities.

Philadelphia, PA − September 11, 2019 − State Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) issued the following statement after the Fund Our Facilities Coalition called for $100 million in funding for immediate asbestos and lead remediation in toxic schools in Philadelphia.

“The news that one of our city’s educators has been diagnosed with asbestos-induced mesothelioma is heartbreaking. It is the exact reason why we are advocating and supporting the Fund Our Facilities Coalition and its continued call for a dramatic increase in funding to address toxic schools in Philadelphia and across Pennsylvania.

We cannot delay addressing this public health crisis any longer. It is a public health emergency and must be responded to immediately.”
