Hughes Welcomes Gov. Wolf to Groundbreaking for New Market West
15 million state investment paves way for critical project in West Philadelphia
“It takes teamwork to make a dream work.”
“This is a wonderful day for West Philadelphia and our region. Ground has been broken for New Market West. New Market West is a transformative project that will serve as a community hub for generations to come.”
I was thrilled to welcome Gov. Tom Wolf and other state and federal officials for the groundbreaking for New Market West, a community and retail hub planned for development at 5901 Market Street. This project will provide much needed services and homes to our West Philadelphia community. The state has a significant investment in this project and I was pleased to join others in working to secure $15 million in funding.
When you think of New Market West-think community revitalization, job creation and accessible services!
- Community Revitalization
- New Market West will be constructed in a currently vacant 1.5-acre lot. The central location of New Market West makes transit access easy, allowing it to act as a service hub for the community.
- Job Creation
- New Market West will create 94 full-time jobs and retain 277 with the total jobs created and retained at 371; More than 200 construction professionals will work on New Market West, creating 60-70 full-time-equivalent jobs over the two-year construction period.
- The center will also become the new headquarters for ACHIEVEability and Horizon House, bringing new employees to the business area and expanding access to their services.
- Project partners ACHIEVEability, Mission First, and Horizon House will work together to provide early childhood education, workforce development, behavioral health services, and community-focused retail space that is vital to the West Philadelphia community.
