Students from across PA joined to celebrate the United States of Readers program and receive new Abbott Elementary books. The main message: Reading is fundamental!

As we see reading test scores fall and hear more and more that children cannot read, Senator Hughes is encouraging everyone to stand up and take action to fix the country’s and Pennsylvania’s literacy epidemic.

In addition to getting more books in the hands of students,Senator Hughes is leading bipartisan legislation that will bring a science-based curriculum to schools and promote better reading outcomes for students in third grade and under.

“This bipartisan legislation will give students and teachers the tools they need to take an evidence-based approach to reading and succeed. It’s a multi-pronged solution and a step in the right direction for the education of our students. It’s important that we treat the literacy epidemic with urgency to get all Pennsylvania students and their reading proficiency on the right track.”
