Senator Hughes host fair housing community roundtable to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act

Philadelphia – Diciembre 12, 2018 – State Senator Vincent Hughes (D- Philadelphia/Montgomery) and State Senator Art Haywood (D-Philadelphia/Montgomery) joined, activists, advocates, and community organizations for a roundtable discussion on the Fair Housing Act of 1968.

The roundtable discussion took place at the ACHIEVEability Community Services Office. Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, the Fair Housing Rights Center of Southeastern Pennsylvania, and more were a part of the conversation to provide insight on what their organizations do to combat housing discrimination in 2018.

“We want to do more than just start the conversation,” Sen. Hughes said. “There are people doing great work in Philadelphia and across the state to ensure residents can get the housing they need without any barriers. We have to continue to support those groups and support their mission of equity.”

Those in attendance pledged to reconvene to discuss further solutions to housing discrimination, access and affordability issues. Sen. Hughes and Sen. Haywood agreed to help lead the charge and fight for legislative solutions to the issues advocates reported.

“While there are less housing discrimination cases today than fifty years ago, it is important for those with complaints to file lawsuits with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission,” Sen. Haywood said. “There needs to be more calls to action to follow the complaints.”
