HARRISBURG, Septiembre 22, 2010 – State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Phila./Montgomery) will host the Senate Democratic Policy Committee in Philadelphia this Jueves for a discussion on his legislation (S.B. 1460) that would increase the minimum amount of automobile liability insurance a vehicle owner is required to carry.

The hearing will take place on Jueves, Septiembre 23 at 10 a.m. in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Philadelphia City Hall.

“Increased costs associated with medical care have forced the need to raise the amount of liability insurance an individual must carry,” Hughes said. “Not only that, the current limited liability insurance rates have remained the same since the law was first established in 1991, not adjusting for inflation. It is important that the legislature take a close look at this important matter.”

The Hughes legislation would increase the vehicle liability limits to a minimum of $30,000 for any one person injured and $60,000 for injuries to two or more persons. Coverage for property damage would be increased to a minimum of $10,000.

“I am pleased to accept Senator Hughes’ invitation to hold this hearing in Philadelphia and look forward to discussing this legislation and hearing all points of view on this issue,” said Richard Kasunic, chairman of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee.
