PHILADELPHIA, Enero 4, 2013 – – State Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Phila./Montgomery) today issued the following statement on the passing of local labor leader Wendell W. Young III, who served as president emeritus of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776.
“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Wendell W. Young III. Mr. Young was one of the most influential leaders in labor relations in Philadelphia and throughout Pennsylvania.
“His deep dedication to union members and the labor movement as a whole will be profoundly missed. His progressive leadership and commitment to his members and all working people garnered respect from around the world.
“Throughout his long career, Wendell worked tirelessly for job creation, job equality, and workers rights, even those workers who were not members of his or any union. His fearless style and his fight for social justice set a bar that many of today’s labor leaders strive to achieve.
“Wendell was a true, legendary hero to the labor movement, the likes of which will never be seen again. My deepest condolences go out to his family.”
