We are 46 days away from the general election and less than two weeks away from the end of the 2020 Census count, which means it is crunch time for two very important parts of our democracy.
Let’s start with the good news: Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court recently sided with measures that would expand access to the ballot:
- Counties can use drop boxes for mail-in ballots and satellite election centers
- Ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by Viernes will be counted
- Poll watchers must reside in county they watch
A federal judge also halted operational changes to the U.S. Postal Service ahead of the election that could have potentially caused critical delays, which means voters can rely on the mail to submit their ballots. Stay tuned for more developments on the upcoming election as there are still other announcements to come.
As for the census, I cannot stress how important the decennial census will be for the next 10 years. There is about $21,000 that could be lost for the region for each person not counted. We need you to respond today. You can do so at 2020census.gov. It takes less than 10 minutes and will have an impact for 10 years.
For those who have already responded, I’m grateful that you have done your part. I’d now like to ask you to help us get an accurate count by spreading the word about completing the census. Send a tweet, post on Facebook, ask your friends and neighbors if they’ve completed the census. Philadelphia residents can get a cool door hanger to remind people about the importance of the census.
The census count in Philadelphia is a lot lower than it should be and I’m working with Councilmember Curtis Jones and Representative Morgan Cephas to help get folks in the district counted. We’ll be at Carroll Park this Sábado at 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with information about completing the census and getting registered to vote, as well as free shredding for constituents. Masks and social distancing are required.
