Federal government, Pa. extend income tax filing deadline

PA Personal Income Tax filing Deadline Extended to Mayo 17, 2021

The Internal Revenue Service and the Pennsylvania Department have announced that they have extended tax filing deadlines to Mayo 17 for 2020 taxes.

This extension is meant to give additional time for taxpayers who have been struggling during the pandemic by providing an additional month to file taxes beyond the traditional Abril 15 deadline. That will mean penalties and interest on 2020 personal income tax returns will also be waived until Mayo 17.

The Pennsylvania Department of Revenue has launched a new, state-only filing system to help residents file electronically. That can be accessed at mypath.pa.gov.

Users will not have to create a username or password to use myPATH. The filing system can be accessed with your Social Security number and either: (1) the tax liability for a previous tax year; or (2) their birth date, Pennsylvania driver’s license/photo ID number and the expiration date for the license/photo ID.

  • Fast and free return/refund processing
  • The “Where’s My Income Tax Refund?” system to track the status of a refund
  • Instant confirmation of a successful filing
  • The benefit of error-reducing automatic calculators
  • User-friendly options that are not available to taxpayers filing by paper
  • The ability to view a detailed Statement of Account for personal income tax

Personal income tax assistance is also available through the department’s Online Customer Service Center and by calling 717-787-8201 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Lunes through Viernes or use the online help center through the MyPATH chat.

Our friends at the Campaign for Working Families are here to help file your federal taxes. They can also help to see if you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), as well as other benefits and assistance programs to help those in need.
