Senator Hughes recently stood with leaders, alumni, and students at Cheyney University to stand up for the integrity and legacy of the school, and fight back against the unfair and unwarranted Middle States decision to put the University on probation.

All evidence indicates that the decision by Middle States is wrong. Consistent with the Governor’s most recent assessment, the Middle States decision should be rescinded.

Governor Shapiro also shared a letter in support of Cheyney University, saying “I believe Middle States erred in its hasty decision to place Cheyney on probationary status without rationale and without warning…Historically Black colleges and universities, like Cheyney University, play a critical role in our system of higher education.”

Both Senator Hughes and Cheyney University President Aaron Walton stressed the importance of public support to uphold the reputation and morale of the university. Senator Hughes said, “We are united and Cheyney strong. We’re not going anywhere.”

Now, the University waits for an answer for their request for an urgent meeting with representatives from Cheyney and the Department of Education within 30 days to discuss a plan to end the probationary status and delay any further reviews.
