Hughes Set to Host 12th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser
Philadelphia, PA – September 2, 2009 – State Senator Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.) will host his 12th annual charity benefit to raise money for the James Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund (JHMSF) on Thursday, September 10 at the Please Touch Museum from 6-10 p.m.
“This scholarship fund has helped many students reach their academic goals of attending college,” Hughes said. “We must continue this great effort.”
The JHMSF, named in honor of Hughes’ late father, James Hughes -- a savvy businessman and staunch advocate for educational access, focuses on raising scholarship dollars for graduates of Philadelphia public and charter high schools who attend one of the 14 Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education universities.
The Fund makes four-year commitments of $1,500 annually to students who maintain an acceptable GPA. Over the years, the Fund has raised and disbursed more than $1 million to nearly 400 students.
The theme of this year’s event, “Be Inspired. Be Motivated. Be There,” encourages supporters to invest in James Hughes’ legacy of ensuring students’ access to higher education.
