Hughes to Host "Surviving a Layoff" Seminar
HARRISBURG, April 28, 2009 – In an effort to reach out to individuals affected by job loss, state Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.) will hold a “Surviving a Layoff” seminar on Friday, May 1 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sharon Baptist Church, 3955 Conshohocken Ave.
“In this current economic climate, layoffs are a common part of everyday life. This seminar will provide common sense solutions for coping with unemployment,” Hughes said. “Our efforts are closely aligned with Governor Rendell’s recent directive to state agencies and legislators to enhance outreach efforts to unemployed and underemployed Pennsylvanians who need assistance.”
The event, co-sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Labor, Pennsylvania CareerLink and Sharon Baptist Church, will address the needs of those most adversely affected by the economic downturn and link them to a wide variety of programs and services focused on unemployment insurance, job hunting and career strategies, credit management and mortgage assistance.
“Losing your job can be discouraging, but there are resources that can help you stay grounded and recover your footing in the workforce,” Hughes said. “I encourage all individuals affected by a layoff to attend this informative community seminar.”
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for Philadelphia in February 2009 was 7.7 percent. In Pennsylvania it was 7.5 percent.
“While we are still below the national average for unemployment, it still affects our state and our communities,” Hughes said. “That is why it is important that individuals learn how to cope and recover from job loss.”
On hand at the event will be representatives and resources from the following organizations:
- Home Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP)
- CHIP/Adultbasic
- Consumer Credit Counseling of Delaware Valley
- Philadelphia Unemployment Project
- PGW
- PECO
- City of Philadelphia Water Revenue Department
- AFL-CIO/United Way of SEPA
