Hughes to Participate in "Stop the Violence" Seminar and Gun BuyBack

PHILADELPHIA, May 29, 2009—State Sen. Vincent Hughes (D-Phila.) will join the Millcreek Baptist Church of Philadelphia for a Stop the Violence Conference and Gun Buyback. The conference, entitled “Commitment to Conquer,” is intended to help stem the violence plaguing the communities in Philadelphia.

"We must do all that we can to ensure the safety and well being of the citizens in this community,” Hughes said. “This conference and gun buyback effort is a critical step toward stopping the violence that is plaguing our streets and stealing the lives of so many of our youths. I encourage the entire community to participate in this very important event.”

The weekend long conference will open this evening, Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. with a news conference and continues on Saturday, May 30, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with youth and adult workshops and a gun buyback from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event concludes on Sunday, May 31 with two events at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

    • Gun Buyback, Saturday, May 30, 2009 from 9:30AM to 2:00PM

  • Sunday, May 31st, 2009 at 10:45AM & 3:30PM – Theme: “The Armor to Conquer,” Ephesians 6:11-18
    • 11 AM – Rev. Dr. Leo Thorn, Deputy General Secretary, ABC USA
    • 3:30 PM – 7 Ministers will present the “Whole Armor of God”
