August 10, 2009 — Hughes stood alongside members of the Philadelphia Senate Delegation, other fellow Senate Democrats, and members of the Fraternal Order of Police to urge the prompt Senate passage of legislation that would authorize Philadelphia to move forward with its economic recovery plan. August 4, 2009 — Gov. Ed Rendell signed House Bill 1770 into law. The bipartisan legislation will use federal money to extend unemployment benefits by seven weeks for 23,000 of Pennsylvania’s jobless workers and almost 60,000 by the end of the year.
