Minimum Wage

For nine long years, Senator Hughes fought diligently to increase Pennsylvania’s minimum wage and provide the working poor with a “dignified pay for dignified work.” In July 2006, his vision for adequate pay for all Pennsylvanians was realized with the signing of legislation that he co-sponsored into law.

At the signing of the law, Senator Hughes reflected on an important milestone in the life of the legislation. “I remember the first meeting that we had on this issue with Governor Rendell. He insisted that the Commonwealth could not afford to wait to do the right thing. His commitment to the cause was clear and we applaud his leadership as we write yet another important chapter in the history of this great state.”
