On February 17, 2009, President Barack Obama signed into law a $787 billion economic stimulus package with the intended goal of ameliorating the effects of the recession brought about by the subprime mortgage crisis and the resulting credit crunch. |
| Hughes has supported this economic stimulus plan, saying, “With Pennsylvania facing a $2.35 billion deficit and painful program cuts, the president’s stimulus package would give us an economic boost and would provide tax relief to already burdened citizens. Stimulus funds will be used to invest in infrastructure around the country, including transportation, roads, health care, and education and will provide money to projects that will move us away from being energy dependent on other countries.” |
