Test Scores Fall Because of Education Funding Cuts
The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently released statewide test results designed to assess the academic performance of students in K-12 schools. These tests, know as Keystone Exams, are supposed to provide an annual snapshot of student comprehension of math, science, reading, and other academic areas.
The charts below show how the scores statewide have declined over the past few years. This should come as no surprise. The current Governor has reduced funding for public education by nearly $1 billion since taking office. The second chart below shows how these cuts year-by-year.
These cuts have had a devastating impact on our schools, including reductions in critical programs inside our classrooms and 20,000 layoffs for school employees. The cuts to public education are the reason that academic performance has declined so dramatically.
Please share this e-mail with your friends, family, and co-workers. We need to make sure that everyone understands how the education cuts are impacting our children and the future of our Commonwealth.
