First in A Series: The Crisis in Education Funding!

Hello,

classroom I wanted to share some important information on education funding, including some eye-popping statistics about the devastating state budget cuts that have been imposed on Pennsylvania schools over the past few years. Clearly, our school system has not received the necessary support from state government to ensure that our children thrive academically and socially.

Knowledge is power. That’s why I’ll be sharing detailed statistics about school funding in a series of e-mails over the coming days. I hope that you will find this information useful and share it with your friends, family, and co-workers.

Thanks,
Senator Vincent Hughes

PS: The graph below shows that funding for public education has been cut by nearly $1 billion since the current Governor took office. At the same time as cutting funds for public education, the Governor cut taxes for major corporations by more than $1 billion.

TOTAL CLASSROOM FUNDING IS $220 MILLION LOWER NOW THAN IT WAS IN 2008-09!

Classroom Funding Reductions

HERE ARE THE KEY NUMBERS:

  • FUNDING FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION WAS AT $5.84 BILLION IN 08-09 AND DROPPED TO $5.62 BILLION IN 2013-14.

  • OVER THE PAST TEN YEARS, THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF FUNDING WAS $6.32 BILLION IN 2010-11. THAT DROPPED TO $5.62 BILLION BY 2013-14.

TAKE ACTION

Please contact the Governor and ask him to restore the nearly $1 billion cuts that have been made to public education over the past two years.
